Most of the time the cornet parts are the main parts and the trumpet are not
quite as important. Alfred Reed does the opposite. He feels that the cornet
blends with the french horn and woodwind sounds better than the brilliant
trumpet sound. I have heard bands who have adhered to the trumpet/cornet
parts played on the prescribed instruments, and they sound great. I have
also heard bands who have simply used all trumpets or all cornets and they
also sound great. I just know that Alfred Reed definitely feels there is a
distinction between the sounds of the trumpet and the cornet.
