The correct spelling is Immer Kleiner and, while the word Immer
literally means "always", I believe it translates more accurate-
ly in this context to "ever," as in "Ever Smaller." This is
just my linguistic/aesthetic sense of it, given what happens to
the clarinet over the course of the piece, and I don't really
know whether or not the composer would agree with my interpre-
tation. Is there anything written on the sheet music itself
to illuminate the point? I have it buried in a box somewhere
that I still haven't unpacked since moving here three months
ago!
