Material DOES matter. However, it seems to matter more to the player than the
listener. Also, there is the interconnectivity between all factors, so that
material ALONE does not make a huge difference. Commercial barrels are made
of several types of wood, ABS plastic, and aluminum, etc. Each has its place.

The finish of the inside of the barrel is another factor, and again we could
debate this all day. Many people feel that a softer wood, with a grainier
finish, will make a better tone than a hard wood with a shiny polish.

perpendicular cross section through any joint or barrel of any 'standard'
clarinet (ignoring
tolerances during manufacture, swelling and shrinking of the wood,
changes when plastic cools, and so forth) is _designed_ to be circular?

Barrels that are bored are must have a circular cross section. it being
impossible to bore an oval. It would be possible to mold an oval (or square)
bore, but I personally do not know of any in commercial manufacture at this
time.

Many barrels have a conical, rather than cylindrical, bore, if that is the
question.
