When browsing the local music store for some good solos for my still-distant
but all-too-quickly approaching college auditions, I came across a piece
called "The Incredible Shrinking Clarinet". The clarinet had a minute or two
of playing, then a piano break while you removed your bell. Then another few
minutes or playing, and piano break to remove the lower joint...so on and so
forth. The part where it was just the barrel and mouthpiece required you to
use your hand to cover and uncover the bottom of the barrel to create a
"wah-wah" effect. I think the part at the end with just the mouthpiece had
the same effect. Alas, I didn't have enough money for both it and the von
Weber Concertino, or I would have picked it up. (Though after a few weeks
with the von Weber Concertino, I'm not wholly convinced that I wouldn't have
done a better job with "The Incredible Shrinking Clarinet".) Anyway, I guess
that really isn't something I've been "asked to do", per se, but I found it
thoroughly amusing.
