Subj: [kl] Music Notation Software Study: An Invitation
Date: Mon, 2 Oct 2000 17:21:52 -0400

Greetings:

Those of you who typeset your own (or other's) music using a computer
notation software package are invited to join the "Comparative Study of
Music Engraving Systems" taking place at the CG-PUB discussion group. The
group is new, is unmoderated and administered by Matanya Ophee, well-known
publisher, guitar historian and scholar.

Although anyone using any music notation software can join in our study as
long as they agree to abide by the rules of the study, the following
packages are not, as yet, represented:

Sibelius
Igor
Encore
Noteworthy Composer
Personal Composer
Mozart
(And others I can't think of at the moment.)

Here is an excerpt from the mission statement:

A Comparative Study of Music Engraving Systems

The mission of this study is to find out which computerized music
typesetting system is best suited for the purpose of executing an engraving
according to pre-defined standards. While we may stipulate that individual
engravers may very well do much better than the old engravers of the chosen
samples, doing a precise emulation will give us a clear idea which
typesetting system is flexible enough and sophisticated enough to be able
to do manipulate the default settings of the system in order to complete
this task. To participate as an engraver in this study you must:

1. Be a member of the CG-PUB discussion group.
2. Agree to submit your engraving by January 15th 2001, in the format of
3. An engraved page of music, containing all three samples, set to the
specified line length and staff size of each sample. The page will be
submitted as an .EPS file generated by your engraving software, or, if you
prefer, a hard copy page printed on a laser printer at 1200DPI. If you
prefer the hard copy option, please submit ten copies of your work, all
identified by a pseudonym. Your identity will be protected by the study
administrator, me, until the results of the study were published.
4. Agree to submit a report in which you will state how long, in hours
and minutes, it has taken you to complete the task.

It is stipulated that this study will take place only if we have at least
10 committed participants by December 15th, 2000, and also 10 judges who
are not participants in the study and who are qualified to judge the
appearance of a page of music.

The judges will examine the submitted engravings blindly, i.e., they will
not know who engraved what submission and in what typesetting system.

(End Statement)

Full information, along with downloadable pdf files containing the three
short examples being used in our study can be found at:

In addition, if you feel you are qualified to participate as a judge in our
study, we could certainly use you.

So, whether you want to participate as an engraver or as a judge (or simply
want to observe the study's progress), you can subscribe to the CG-PUB
discussion group by
