With the recurring talk about mouthpieces, it has never occurred to
me to think about barrels. So I opened Gibson's book and read:
[beginning at the 3rd paragraph of Chapter 14, Clarinet Acoustics, O.
Lee Gibson]

"Tone is complexly affected by the weight of the barrel [....]
Less weight produces more brilliant and less massive tones (as is the
case with the entire body). [....] Wind resistance and wall losses
are affected by weight [....]"

I was under the impression that Gibson is a respected authority.
How does this relate to the assertion that material does not make a
difference and that only shape counts?

While I'm typing, is it accurate to say that a perpendicular cross
section through any joint or barrel of any 'standard' clarinet (ignoring
tolerances during manufacture, swelling and shrinking of the wood,
changes when plastic cools, and so forth) is _designed_ to be circular?
