Re the Weber, enjoy it. Especially the Rondo. Weber's music is very dramatic. I can almost imagine
Herr Baermann's excitement when he saw the section marked K on my part. This is the bit just after
an ascending semiquaver scale (G Minor) in the strings, and the start of the triplet-semiquavers
"brillante" on the clarinet part. I can imagine Heinrich enthusing to his friend, Carl about how
wonderful it is to have another "finale" section with which to display his virtuosic talents.

This section is my favourite in the piece, being playful, impressive, and drawing the piece to a
definite conclusion. Compare it with the other Weber clarinet pieces. Look at the closing 31 bars in
the Concertino, bar 331 to the end in Concerto #1, bar 202 to the end in Concerto #2, and the last
62 in the Grand Duo Concertant. (every good rule has an exception - in Weber's case the "Variations"
where the theme returns at the end). In five of the six clarinet-solo pieces which Weber wrote,
Baermann (Hermstedt in the case of the Grand Duo) had the opportunity to end on a high, showing off
his talent to the audience with the final flourish. And in each of these five pieces, the final
flourish is very playfully written and enormous fun to play.

Finally, don't think of it quite as much as a quintet - think of it more as a solo piece than a
chamber piece.

Sorry if I went on a bit, but I really like the Weber pieces and (despite their similarities) enjoy
playing them all. I don't know much about the Stanford or the Spohr, but if I remember rightly,
Spohr's main collaborator was the Hermstedt for whom Weber wrote his Grand Duo Concertant.

Regards

Ian
