Hi, David -
A year ago I bought a new Eb clarinet and a new bass clarinet. I went
to International in Des Plaines, and Lisa Argiris had several horns ready for
me to try, including Buffet R13 and RC Ebs. I play way more bass, however,
and so put a lot of money into a Buffet low C model. Having already spent
that much, my Eb is a Patricola for the very reasons you mention - for my
purposes, it plays just as well for far less money. I bought a Greg Smith
mouthpiece for it, and Greg recommended I also purchase a replacement Chadash
barrel, which I did. The combination has worked really well for me. Lisa
said that if I were to specialize in Eb I would probably want to upgrade to a
Buffet, but so far, so good. I would think that a Patricola would do just
fine in a college band program.
