Fred,

Oktoberfest season is upon us and I will be playing a lot of polkas and waltzes for a month. I've been in a German
band since 1963. The leader is from Salasia (spelling) in northern Germany, came to the US in early 50's, did a term
in the US military, then became a band leader. Our former (now deceased) trumpet player was in the German military
bands. He told me "we were doing some performance when we were surprised by an attack from the US soldiers and was
taken captive." During the attack he took a bullet in the buttocks. After a short recuperation in the American
hospital they found out he was a trumpet player and sent him to the nearest US band unit in which he finished out the
war as a musician for the American side, doing shows and dances.

Both of these fellows had first hand knowledge of how things were and told me most of the German people wanted nothing
to do with Hitler and what he was doing, but you did not dare refuse doing whatever Hitlers henchmen told you to do or
you or someone in your family would disappear.

If you could give me more info on the origin of the "Band Rules and Regulations" I would like research it further. I
will also print out your email to us and show it to our MuzikMiester and see if he can elaborate. It might be
interesting.

Regarding recent mail on strange doubles: not so strange maybe, but three years ago our trumpet player became too ill
to play anymore (cancer) so I became the lead trumpet player for about 90% of the tunes and Clarinet and tenor for the
other 10%. (Boy did that TP do a number on my upper lip last night. Guess I shoulda practice a few days before the
first gig. Hadn't touched the horn since last October.)
