The university bands sometimes employ contra bass clarinets. I dare say that
a few civilian (community) bands
will have them also. I think the "big" publishers include a part. Two flutes
AND a piccolo would give you a very good top end. In addition to your 4
saxes, you could enlarge with a soprano sax, but not quite so common. THREE
trumpets is the norm. The 2 cornet parts would possibly then be dispensable,
unless _specially_ desired. EUPHONIUM, in treble and bass stave. Don`t
forget
string bass, (quite common). You can write for up to 2 percussion. More if
you`re
confident the different ensembles will easily find the extra players. It`s
now also not
uncommon to write for harp and sometimes piano. These are probably more
suitable for the
wind ensemble which uses 1 player per part tho`, and only intended for the
"big" concert - commission(?)
But if you have a publisher lined up. (S)he will advise you also
Don`t forget the kazoo and clarinets playing sans mouthpiece, but with
borrowed tuba mouthpieces!!?!
And can you write a solo for me please, without having to use any bloody
gadgets. Write the d - - n thing sensibly. No stupid tricks or ridiculous
time changes. Nothing too difficult or requiring virtuosic fingers. And
don`t make it too long either or we`ll all get our chops blown off. In fact
why don`t you just stick to a simple routine of 32 bars in Bb which will fit
on one side, so we don`t have to use more energy than necessary in turning
over.
Great - you`ve just won a gold medal. Wear it with pride. And invite us all
to the "Opening Ceremony".
Best of luck,
Tony W.
