I don't know if someone was joking or not, but years ago I remember hearing
about a clarinet quartet for four underwater clarinets. I heard that it is
played with a trash can full of water in front of each player and at certain
times during the piece, a portion of the clarinet goes in the water and you
get all kinds of bubbling effects (low E in particular). The story I heard
was that you use plastic clarinets padded with Valentino or other synthetic
pads. This was probably a joke, but they sounded serious. I never disagreed
or disagreed, just listened since they did sound serious. We were always
playing jokes on each other in college like saying that Leopold Stokowski
real name was Leo Stokes but he changed it to sound more famous. I never saw
the music or heard who wrote it, but it does bring up some interesting mental
images.
