I agree. Continue to play both the clarinet and flute. My experience has been
that the clarinet maintains and/or increases finger strength and dexterity
which transfers well and is applicable to the all the saxophones, bass
clarinet and flute that I play. Sometimes (although rare) you can get away
with a finger or two out of position with the saxophones or closed hole
flute. But with the clarinet, you must cover the holes properly at all times
or the party's over. Although I was a flute major in college, it's the
soprano clarinet keeps me together. Make sure you devote ample time to
practicing LONG TONES on the flute. The major difference here (flute wise) is
that you must develop a small aperture within the embouchure that will create
a narrow, controlled, and focused air stream....especially in the upper
register. This is the problem I see with a lot of flute players who are
rooted in saxophone or clarinet pedagogy. I generally have my students begin
their flute long tone studies on B above the staff and ascend in half steps
up to high C. Then, depending on the student's ability/level, we move into
the altisimo register as well, adding a note every 6-8 weeks until we've
reached at least high E. My former teacher Robert Cavally always said that
"if you can play the altisimo notes well, you will automatically improve all
the note underneath". We then return to B above the staff and descend
chromatically in the same manner to low C or B depending on the flute. IMHO,
this (or a variation of) should be the beginning of every woodwindists
warm-up/practice session. Just my 2 cents, but I hope it helps.
