The best possible example you can find (for saxophone subtone, at least)
is Dexter Gordon. I've never heard it used on clarinet, and I've heard it
used on alto, but it's not that great...but on tenor, it's devastatingly
effective. Dex, whenever playing ballads, just seems to find that point
where he gets a sound in tune, but the tone feels empty, and he fills up
that empty space in the tone with this breathy noise that just fits so
right.

Probably the easiest example is I Guess I'll Hang My Tears Out To Dry on
the vinyl/CD Go!. He subtones the very first few notes there...the other
ballad on Go!, Where Are You, has him subtoning mostly at the ends of
phrases.

Actually, just about any ballad Dex has done (except maybe Willow Weep for
Me and Body and Soul) has use of his subtone. Its goooooood stuff.
