I've played pieces that used these techniques, and actually, enjoyed them
a great deal. Doing strange things with your instrument can make you feel
mighty funny, but the music itself was a hoot. It was fun to play, and I
liked *listening* to it, too.

For what it's worth, the mouthpiece was in "Grand Serenade for an Awful
Lot of Winds and Percussion" by Peter Schickele, and the key clicks were
meant to emulate crab claws in "Hymn to St. Francis" by Dan Buckvich.
This guy is incredibly inventive! and seems to remember what it was like
to be in 5th grade band with a shiny new toy: who else would have the
trumpets turn their instruments over and blow across the valve holes, or
make the percussionists use water balloons in empty liter bottles to
sound like octopi? And all sorts of other stuff.
