I'm not entirely certain which position you're arguing here. I read your
message to say "kids are exposed to so much profanity in school that it
really doesn't matter if they get more." If that's not what you meant, I
apologize.

But if my interpretation is correct, then I think you are very wrong. I have
no doubt that you have "seen shocking stuff go in school", but the point is
that you SHOULD NOT. The fact that something happens does not make it right,
and the fact that kids behave a certain way in school does not make that
behavior acceptable or proper.

Young people push the limits. They always have, they always will. Part of
the maturation process is testing to find what the limits are. In the
distant past, parents and school officials actually HAD limits, and enforced
them. Today, we seem to be converging on the attitude that there shouldn't
BE any limits.

It's one thing to impress your friends by swearing a blue streak in the boys
room. But flinging a seven-words-you-can't-say-on-TV level profanity around
a public mailing list read by a thousand people is an entirely different
story. Would this person know that issuing such an epithet in an interview
or business meeting would likely have direct adverse economic impacts? How
would he know that, unless someone has pointed it out?

Geez, listen to me. I'm turning into an old man.
