A question: How many clarinetists were at this audition?
Am I the only person bothered by the fact that Canadian orchestras still have
"Canadian-only" auditions? When a vacancy occurred for principal clarinet in
this "World Class" orchestra some years ago, the position was filled by a
similar audition. Apparently competition frightens Canadians, who keep the
vast number of Americans at bay for their premiere jobs, but have no problem
coming to our more open and competitive country and taking our jobs. This
seems to be a problem with clarinet in particular, since there are obviously
too many good clarinetists for the demand, and Canadian orchestras can easily
lessen the pool by keeping the Americans out. They would of course never
dream of doing such a thing when they need to fill a position in the horn
section or the bassoon section, so why clarinet.

If it sounds like I'm a little bitter, perhaps, but in this age of
globalization and free markets, I'm prepared to go head to head with anyone,
just open the doors!!!!
