Subj: [kl] Mouthpiece variation

Until this week, I've always refused to take mouthpieces out on
trial. It doesn't seem like a 'fair business practice' to me.
But this time around, my instructor insisted that I try a certain
mouthpiece in order to correct one of my many problems, and she gave me
her sternest possible instruction (which isn't very stern, actually)
that I take three of them on trial and return the two that I like least.
Well.... I was astonished and flabbergasted to see how much
difference there is between individual mouthpieces. Same reed, same
ligature, mounted as nearly as I can to identically (even the insignias
lined up the same way), played within 5 minutes of each other in order
to eliminate (as much as possible) the effects of fatigue and weather
and my mood.
If here were no labels on these mpcs (from a respected
manufacturer, not the $30 student variety), I wouldn't believe that they
were the same model.

(Astonished) cheers,
Bill
