Pierce says that we need to hear 16 cycles at 1000 hz or less, or
32 cycles above 1000 hz.
So if you are playing a note whose frequency is (say) 440 cps, you
need 16/440 = approximately 1/30 second in order to hear a tone rather
than a click.
