A few days ago, I posted a theory of mine about a correlation between
mouthpiece tip opning and tonguing speed. Clark Fobes was kind enough to give
a thoughtful reply.

There was another reply...I didn't save it. It went something like
this....".go na na na na na na na na na na...as fast as you can. This is how
fast your tongue moves, and nothing you can stick on the end of your clarinet
can improve that."

Well, this reply annoyed me, and I was tempted to give a smarta** reply, but
something held me back.

I'm glad I didn't reply, because this irritant kept me thinking, and I kept
turning the problem over in my mind.

I began to realize that my tongue works no slower, nor faster than anyone
else's. What I was NOT doing successfuly was transferring the potential speed
to the reed.

As I turned this problem over in my head, it bagan to occur to me that often,
my tongue would overstrip the ability of the reed to spring back in time to
receive the next tongue-stroke. In other words, I often "overtook" the reed,
causing a "stumble".

Here is my concept - With all other things being equal, a reed on an open tip
can/maybe MUST move farther on each vibration. Therefore it would take more
time for the reed to "flex" and be ready and in position for the next tongue
stroke.

Whoever made that post that annoyed me was indeed correct, equipment cannot
make my tongue move faster. But MAYBE it can position the reed more
correctly, so that it is ready for each successive tongue stroke.

Does that make any sense to anybody?
