I liked that cushion of air between the reed and the flat bit at the end
of the mouthpiece forcing the reed to bounce up theory. What you really
got is a venturi effect pulling the reed and the mouthpiece together.
When they touch the airflow is interrupted, and the reed springs back
allowing the air to flow and the reed to be pulled down again.
According to Benade, both of these effects contribute to the final
behavior.
Also, according to Benade, the reed can *either* close all the way
or not close completely, depending on how hard the player breathes
(blows). Benade describes the cross-over point between not closing and
closing completely as the "change of feel." Benade shows graphs of how
the ratios of the partials change at this "change of feel" point.
Finally, Benade goes just a bit beyond pure physics and begins to
suggest some subjective 'artistic metaphors' for the behaviors above and
below this "change of feel" point.
No absolutes when discussing music.... as difficult as it is
sometimes to accept this. I keep forgetting this myself. You think
I'd have learned by now......
Cheers,
