my pennys worth:
1) offer a mouthpiece with a medium long, moderately to slightly open facing
(VanDoren B45, Selmer C120/85).
2) offer the softest reed possible (i.e. a 2) until the muscles controlling
embouchure have adapted (trained) sufficiently. As he goes along he will
find 21/2 and 3's easier and longer lasting. If he closes up on a
reasonnable #2 then the embouchure is likely to tight (biting). Use long
tones (4 to 8 seconds) from open G down to train at least 10 minutes a day.
3) only then consider a shorter, closer facing and harder reeds.
3) instruct him how to break in slowly and store reeds so they keep a flat
bottom, check the reeds for him.

Mouthpiece suggestions, please.
