I have a curious situation that I would appreciate comments on.

One of my grandsons (a percussionist, now studying timpani) wants to learn
the clarinet as his "second instrument". (This seems to be the rage, now,
in the area high schools. When I went to school, we would never have
considered an instrument outside our "family" of instruments. <g> His twin,
BTW, a trumpet player, wants to take up the flute.)

My problem, he can't control my Pete Fountain crystal mouthpiece, it seems,
regardless of the reed (tried several brands and strengths.) I also have
the original HS* that came with the clarinets (in 1961) and a Vandoren 88 (I
think the number is) and another hard rubber mpc that has the name worn off.

He's 15, understand the concepts of breath support and embouchure well (it
seem), grasped the hand position quickly. However the reeds seem to have
huge differences with little variation. (I realize that doesn't make any
sense. Trying again:) For example, a 2.5 completely closes up. A 3.0 is
like a 2x4 for him. (He is putting his lower lip in the correct position.)
I haven't used anything but VanDorens for years, and that's all I have on
hand, so I thought I would get an opinion, rather than spending money on
something -- or several somethings -- that won't improve the situation.

Thanks, Jim
