Good morning,
I am writing because I lack sufficient knowledge about buying used
instruments. There is someone in town who is trying to sell a matched set
of Buffets dating from the mid-Fifties (serial numbers on both are 50xxx).
I assume they are R-13s. I am going to check them out for students of mine
and wish to know if there is anything to look for as far as condition is
concerned. I pretty much know the obvious (cracks, scratches in bore,
etc.). I am certain that wear on posts is also a concern. Any other defects
to look for?

Also, since I have never bought a used instrument for myself, are there any
serious disadvantages to buying instruments this old? There has been a term
used on the list called "blow out", which I've never experienced. How do
you tell if an instrument is blown out?

Also, is there any demand for Buffets from this time period? I am looking
into these instruments for students of mine and want make certain that they
get decent instruments at prices they can afford. TIA for your help.
