Subj: [kl] Clarinet "smears"?

Can anyone describe how to go about learning to perform a "smear", "slide"
or whatever the proper term is on a clarinet. An example of what I'm trying
to learn is the clarinet part of the beginning of Rhapsody in Blue. I
presume it involves sliding fingers off keys in sequential order, as well as
a change in embouchure - tightening if going up, or relaxing if going down,
but is there any more to it than this?
Likewise - a similar technique for doing the same on saxophone would be
appreciated - ie. Boots Randolph in Yackety Sax.
I'd appreciate any help in what to practice to accomplish these techniques.
