I have two cats. The first is Elsa (named after the bride in Lohengrin).
Of her twelve pounds, at least ten can be attributed to central nervous
system. My playing doesn't bother her at all; my children do.

The second is Edgar (named after the best hitter in the American League).
He's also known as "Edgar the Stupid" or "The Blobster." Edgar weighs about
21 pounds. He could be dead -- no one has seen him move very much lately --
but his location is different from time to time. Since none of my kids is
strong enough to move him, we assume that he moves himself.

Needless to say, Edgar appears to be profoundly deaf. He doesn't notice
when I play clarinet. He barely notices when my 3-year-old sits on him.
It's amazing, though -- the tiny crinkling noise of the cat food package can
be heard from the far end of the house . . . .
