When my brother and I were kids, he played clarinet, too. We used to play
"trios" with his dog. Silkie was the runt of a litter of overbred Cocker
Spaniels, a sweet, pretty little black doggie, but none too bright. She
would put her delicate nose in the air and howl the most soulful soft
"woooooooooo" in harmony. When we would play a long tone, with my brother on
bass clarinet and me on alto, Silkie would howl a warbling sixth or a wide
seventh above me, to eerie effect. Apparently she didn't mind some
snickering in the background! I had the impression that she wasn't in
distress. Sometimes she would lean against the leg of one of us and gaze up
adoringly. I think she was just being a good pack animal and howling along
companionably, perhaps contacting the ancient inner wolf.

Her howling was a problem during serious practice sessions, though. Even
when I practiced piano, she'd sit underneath it, right at my feet, and "sing"
along with that, too. I had to start banishing her to the back yard, because
I couldn't concentrate with the canine obligato.

I'm making my stupid pet human type this. I thoroughly approve of English
cats (not that they need my approval!), with their elegant feline composure,
so unlike dogs that howl and yelp in an undignified manner.
