The foramen ovale means an "oval opening". There can be one in the heart=
and
also one at the base of the skull. The trigeminal nerve (cranial nerve V=
)
exits the brain thru the foramen ovale and the foramen
rotundum (the "round opening"). The Trigeminal nerve supplies the muscle=
s of
mastication, some of which are used to play wind instruments as well as t=
o
chew food. The carotid artery supplies facial structures through a branc=
h
known as the external carotid. The internal carotid branch enters the cr=
anial
cavity through the carotid foramen. It goes on to the Circle of Willis wh=
ich
is a group of blood vessels at the base of the brain. It is a common area=
for
"cerebral vascular accidents" The foramen ovale of the heart is for fetal=

circulation, it usually is closed in adults. Therefore, I believe that t=
his
is referring to the foramen ovale at the skull.
