David B. Niethamer wrote re the Brahms sonatas:

<<<I find viola recordings and performances of these pieces to be very
instructive. String players have a different approach to playing than
clarinet players, vibrato being the most notable feature. It's more overtly
"espressivo" (to chime in on that subject!) than the cooler clarinet sound.

The Primrose/Firkusny (viola) recording of the Eb sonata is nice, too.>>>

A "me too" -- it's interesting to compare a performance that we tooters
would consider "over the top" with what our string compatriots do.
Violinists I hang with consider wind musicians hopelessly square; one friend
chalks it up to "too much marching band." I don't buy that -- IMHO, the
superior rhythmic integrity of wind musicians has more to do with the
definiteness of our attack -- but it is an interesting comparison
nonetheless.

Equally interesting is the flip side, where we borrow their music. I've
listened to a number of recordings of the Copland Violin Sonata; it works so
much better on clarinet, don't you think?
