I was just looking through Charles Rosen's "The Classical Style", trying
to find Beethoven's complex tempo indication that I just quoted to Ed (I
couldn't find it, and had to look elsewhere).

Rosen says that for Beethoven, 'espressivo' involved a ritenuto, at
least on the piano: as in the Piano Sonatas Op 109 (where an
'espressivo' is always followed by an 'a tempo') and 111 (where the
indication 'espressivo' is always accompanied by a 'ritenente'.)

On the other hand, Beethoven said of the Largo of the D major Sonata Op
10 no. 3 that the tempo must be changed ten times, but "only so as to be
heard by the most sensitive ear".

So I think we need a more contextual way of understanding 'espressivo';
and naturally, I recommend mine!-)
