So I tested dogs and cats and birds around the neighborhood. Some
of them seemed unaffected by my playing. I've decided that it's not
cruelty to play in front of an animal -- in the same sense that I don't
accuse my daughter of cruelty when she plays that awful trash pop music
within my hearing. Last week, my instructor's dog curled up at our feet
while we were playing.
Animals have their own tastes, I'm sure; but I doubt that we
clarinetists are causing them actual pain.
