My dogs are my best audience.

When I first started playing, and my daughter's hamster went wild
and my cat and dog fled the room, I had to contemplate whether I was
being cruel to the animals. (I've suffered a similar dilemma with my
photography because a serious photographer uses strobe a lot when
shooting animals.) Most of all, I wondered whether my beginner's tone
was so bad that I should make some provision for my animals.
So I tested dogs and cats and birds around the neighborhood. Some
of them seemed unaffected by my playing. I've decided that it's not
cruelty to play in front of an animal -- in the same sense that I don't
accuse my daughter of cruelty when she plays that awful trash pop music
within my hearing. Last week, my instructor's dog curled up at our feet
while we were playing.
Animals have their own tastes, I'm sure; but I doubt that we
clarinetists are causing them actual pain.
