[Not to diss She Who Must Be Obeyed, Lelia, just to conserve
space:-)] Since moving to the new quarters in mid-August, besides
rediscovering cleaning rituals for the instruments, my discovery has been a
bit different, namely that the animals can handle just about anything
except each other. We have four cats and one half-Rott/Shepherd puppy (if
you call a seven-month-old, 50-pound velociraptor a "puppy":-); and because
Marie's kid plays and I play, all the animals are used to assorted squawks,
wheezes, and blats from various woodwinds. On Sunday I hauled out the Bb
clarinet and stood on the back porch while the dog was tethered in the yard
between walks and trashing the house. I started playing various opera
pieces by ear, from memory, trying to get my lip back after not playing for
awhile, and the dog--wonder of wonders--lay down in the shade of a parked
car and LISTENED without yowling. Either I'm not as awful as I think or
the dog is tone-deaf, but he's a more attentive audience than the cats,
whose reaction to musical instruments has always been the standard cat
reaction to anything not immediately related to food, personal hygiene,
each other, or fighting the dog, which they all hate with a passion: "And
this is supposed to affect me how?"
