I suppose it was to do with having spent the last two days recording the
Brahms clarinet quintet, and struggling myself with how to interpret
what Brahms wrote -- which is pretty much all we have of him, alas.

Not to mention struggling home from the pub afterwards.

So whilst in the process of replying to Roger -- Shilcock, not the other
one, thank God -- I had a sudden incredulity attack that I'd apparently
been engaging in a serious conversation with somebody who had been
holding forth about the relationship between what composers write (and
even what they *should* write) and what performers play; but who then
seemed surprised that he might be expected at some point to have looked
at an actual piece of music, by a proper composer.

For example, by Brahms. For the clarinet.

That's all.

I left the Tony W tagline in, as I have again, because it seems to me
that the two cases aren't altogether dissimilar.

.....I would hazard a guess that the work would not have sounded much different
(even to ears of the perfect pitch variety) had Eb clarinets, C trumpets,
cor ang, Eb horns all been used also. (Tony Wakefield on Schoenberg Op 9.)
