Off topic, but.... The broom incident piqued my curiosity. The
handle didn't have anything remotely resembling silver key work, and
aren't dogs color blind?

It turns out that dogs sacrifice a major amount of color perception
and a moderate amount visual acuity in order to see better in the dark
(hunting etc). Dogs have only 10% of the color-detecting cones that
humans have, and they respond mostly to blue-green vs yellow (not the
full spectrum that we see). But nevertheless, they do see some color.
Their average vision is 20/75, which means they need to be within
25 feet of something in order to see it as clearly as we do at 75 feet.
Perhaps the absence of keywork wasn't as obvious to my dog from across
the room.
Probably most important, the article that I read emphasized their
lower angle of vision (and poorer depth perception, believe it or not).
I can imagine that from my dog's point of view, the top of the broom
handle appeared close to my mouth, and it may have appeared to the poor
creature that I was going to inflict a new super-sized clarinet on him.
