My dog has learned to leave the room when I pick up my clarinet,
even before I take the cap off. Today I bought a new broom for the
kitchen. It has a black handle, and I never stopped to think how my
long-suffering dog would interpret it. As I came in the front door,
carrying the broom, he gave me the saddest look I have ever received
from an animal, and then he headed dispiritedly for the doggie-door.
So I turned around and went back to the store to exchange the
broom. The clerk was a little miffed that I cared about the color of a
broom, but she wrote out the exchange slip anyway. I started to say to
her, "This broom looks too much like a clarinet", but I doubt she
would've understood.
