Dan,
I asked Buffet a while back on the price of a billet of blackwood needed to
produce a clarinet. Not including storage, the raw price was between 5 and
15 dollars/billet for a soprano clarinet (I didn't ask about the larger
clarinets), depending on when it was acquired and the political situation.
Not all billets turn out well, so let's just average it out and say they're
$10/billet of wood. You're probably right about the order of magnitude, but
the difference between a dollar and 10 dollars doesn't amount to much in the
grand scheme of things.
