Ca 1975, I had completed the NMA edition of the Gran Partitta and wanted
to do a first performance of it in that new edition which was about to
be published. At that time I was living in NJ and, on the
recommendation of several people, I hired Fred Alston though I did not
know him personally.

He was an absolutely brilliant bassoonist, though this was his first
performance of the work, and he ate the part alive.

The next season of the NJSO, they played a concert performance of
Elektra and I played basset horn with them. Fred was still there at the
time and still playing brilliantly.

To hear from Steve Hartman that he has given up playing and now is super
of an NYC apartment house is really tragic. What on earth could have
happened?
