In all the discussion of the effects on the reed, I don't remember anyone
asking if there were effects on the mouthpiece. Hard rubber, like glass,
is a plastic material (in the original sense of that term) and will flow in
response to pressure. It does so very slowly, to be sure, but with the
critical nature of mouthpiece dimensions, I would expect to see some flow
after years of being compressed by a tight ligature for 24 hours each day.
Has anyone any experience or measurements to confirm or refute this
prediction?
