Which is exactly why I specifically excluded those things. By "normal,
tonal" I meant everything from classical symphonies to popular songs to
"Happy Birthday" -- typical everyday music that would be encountered daily
by average people and largely approved of, played in elevators and cars,
etc. Schoenberg worked with a different set of rules, is seldom either
normal or tonal, and is difficult or even unpleasant to listen to. He could
probably end his works on the seventh if he wanted, but I consider him and
his ilk to be the exceptions that prove the rule. If a song does NOT end
on the tonic, it simply sounds wrong.
