When you're practicing and you can't summon the range of expression
that you want, take a break and read a melodramatic story out loud to a
kid (the first task in Harry Potter #4 is a good one).
Perhaps when you come back to your clarinet, you'll be loosened up
and prepared to emote.

It works for me.
