OK, Fall is here, our community band has had its first rehearsal,
and much my surprise, the director has chosen a lot of pieces with very
exposed Eb clar parts (which I play). This is really rather nice in a
way, since it took a little persuasion to get the directors (yes, two),
both brass men, to be willing to let any Eb parts at all be included,
but now it's "put up or shut up" for me, and I'm no star on it. I
managed to pull off the "Universal Judgement" solos succesfully last
Spring, but it seems the altissimo gets sharper and sharper as time goes
by (and yes, I realize that sharpness is a chronic Eb problem). Short of
getting a new instrument (not an option), which might not do it anyway,
does anyone have any suggestions/tricks/general directions
to offer? I'm playing a Noblet, in very good condition, with a VD B44
mouthpiece, VD reeds (the trimmed white masters don't quite seem to
respond as well), and reverse Bonade ligature.
Would a longer barrel be of any use here, or would it just throw
everything else off?

Bill Edinger (back on the list after a summer hiatus)
