Roger -

Some people are just so unhappy that they enjoy making a Jackass of
themselves. I have a few more comments that I could make, but this is a
high class list, so I'll delete them before typing.

Dan,

My thought is that ego has everything to do with it. People with enormous
egos who feel they have gained a perspective others have not yet developed
forget what it was that made their services, knowledge, and musicianship so
appealing to others in the first place. Often you see this with performers
- and it rears itself in ways that are very unsatisfying to most people -
they become know-it-alls. You have probably seen it in other disciplines
too.

Regarding Bill Brannen, he has a bitterness about him - that I think came
from getting burned too many times. I remember watching him tell a 55 year
old clarinet teacher from a major university who had brought his horn for
adjustment (I was there picking up a horn that had received new instrument
service and this professor asked to ride along) that he hadn't been oiling
his instrument. The professor assurred Bill that he had oiled it
faithfully each month, but Bill just lectured him and told him that he
couldn't have been. My impression was that Bill so believed his work was
great that the only way the instrument could have broken down was if the
professor hadn't been oiling it! I remember how embarrassed I was at that
exchange.

I wish I knew what caused the bitterness/ego problem with Bill. But then,
I see it everywhere. Could be a form of depression?

Sincerely,
Roger Garrett
