I am not a Sir Andy Lloyd-Webber fan by any means! However, I think "Cats"
works because it had a great lyricist! Don't think of it as a "variety
show"; think of it as a revue of poems by T.S.Eliot! To Lloyd-Webber's
credit, though: there is not a single "meow" music cliché in the score that
I can recall!
(If you've only seen/heard the "American" version, check out the original
London version. They "dumbed it down" for us Americans - took out some
WONDERFUL numbers and rewrote the music to some others).
