Subj: [kl] Bass clarinet repair emergency

I committed an error two nights ago, about which I've been
warning novice bass clarinetists for a decade: the lower
joint must be properly seated in its recessed area of the
case before you close it, lest the pad arms be bent by pres-
sure from the lid. Well, I put my instrument away in a rush,
and when I took it out last night the lowest range of the
instrument no longer spoke (Eb down to C). Since I'm in
the middle of rehearsals to perform Mladi, I need that
lower range and am in now in urgent need of a top-notch
technician who can turn the repair job around within
two weeks.

I spoke to Linda Brannen this morning. Brannen Woodwinds
will no longer work on Selmer 37's (what I currently own,
much to my chagrin), indicating that Buffet's latest iter-
ation of their professional bass clarinet is so superior
that they no longer waste their time with the Selmer. I
know the Buffet is superb, and am perpetually annoyed that
I'm not in a financial situation to acquire one. Gotta
work with what I have at the moment.

My life is still almost entirely packed up in boxes, since
I've had no time to turn my apartment into a home since mov-
ing in two months ago. Hence, I don't have access to my Ro-
lodex. I need recommendations and contact information for
any and all of the top-flight technicians in the country who
are qualified to work on a professional bass clarinet. Curse
you, Clark Fobes, for going out of the repair business! (Just
kidding of course -- I'm thrilled that your craftsman activi-
ties have become so lucrative). Let's start with Tim Clark
