By purest coincidence (truly), I happened to listen to the original
cast recording of Porgy & Bess this morning. Towards the end of the
show, there is a phrase or two that matches either the Rhapsodie in Blue
theme or the American in Paris theme -- I can't remember which now, but
it's unmistakable. I don't know which was written first.
Since I don't own any Schoenberg, I don't know whether this
'favored melody' of Gershwin's is the same one that you're describing.
