Bill,

I have to attribute it partly to what I call the toy factor. Many drummers
start out with an insatiable
desire to play the drum set. Often times this is exaserbated when the
parent buys a drum set
for a 12 year old. Even a seasoned player has a hard time disciplining
himself to keep from
just beating on the set, without any goal in mind. Trying to get the
student to understand
that they must have excellent Snare Drum technique before attempting to
excel on the
drum set is quite a chore.

Secondly, very few of them can see any value in learning the
mallet instruments. They tend to have a very myopic view about drums.
Coupled with
all of this is the fact that drums are not a muscal instrument, though they
can be played musically.
If you think scales and arppegios are boring, try going through page 5 of
George L. Stones Stick
Control Book. There is not the immediate reward of hearing yourself play a
recgnizable song.
Once they begin to develop smooth and even technique, along with some
rythmic understanding,
the task becomes easiier.

I can expand on this if you send me a private response. I don't want to say
anymore at
this time since this is a Clarinet list. Though, I do discuss the Clarinet
on the Percussion
List that I am on.
