I wanted to update those who are interested in the progress of Jay's
Clarinet and Percussion.

I am presently teaching out of 4 different stores, and at home, and have
about 35 students. about 75% are
Clarinetist and the rest I am attempting to turn into Percussionist. This
balance has turned
out very well for me since I find Drum students much more frustrating than
Clarinet Students.

I am still in the process of starting a Home School Band. Hopefully that
will actually begin in
about two weeks. I have received some good advice from a local individual
who has been
doing this for many years.

The Drum Video is going slow. Modern Drummer will finally have it in
their New and Notable
section in the next issue, which comes out at the end of September. It's
been quite a chore trying
to convince drummers that there is more to drumming than beats and licks.

I have had some success with a Drum Line that I was instructing at a new
High School in the County.
I was given 6 Freshmen and 1 Sophomore, Needless to say, it has been an
interesting challenge trying to
get these young players out of the walking and gum chewing stage.
Thankfully, none of the drum charts I
wrote had to be re-written. I anticipated the fact that I would have a
young group of drummers that wouldn't
have a solid Rudimental background and geared the parts for that. They
have been quite enthusiastic, despite
the grumpy old guy they have for an instructor.

On a sad note, I have recently lost one of best Clarinet students because
of some problems that are keeping
him from taking lessons. He had stopped lessons over the summer, but kept
practicing some of the
exercises on articulation that I had given him, and came back a much
better player. On the first lesson, this school year,
he informed me that he was going to audition for the Atlanta Youth
Symphony Orchestra. When I asked him
for the date of the audition, he told me that they would be in about 3
weeks. He had just received the music,
and I showed him as much as I could in one lesson. Even if he doesn't
make it, the experience of auditioning
will be good for him. His mother informed me that he will be back as soon
as they get through whatever has come
up.

I am also involving myself in the start up of the Atlanta Clarinet
Association. This will an arm of the ICA and should
be very helpful in encouraging local young talent to become more enthused
about the Clarinet.

All of the aforementioned is one of the reasons that I haven't contributed
more to the list lately. Other than my typical "boring" jokes.

Thank you for your time, and a special thanks to those who have emailed me
privately with encouraging words.
