Ah, I see! They were *interviews*. When you wrote previously:

....I thought you meant by 'gave' that Burghauser had written them down
himself at the time, and then passed on the manuscript.

So what Lelia says about hearsay is right, then; the point is that the
story is told to Haggin by Burghauser, and then reported by Haggin, not
in his own words at all in the Schoenberg bit, though partly in his own
words in the Strauss bit you just quoted.

It passed through another person, so we can't have a very good idea of
Burghauser's intentions in the incident from what's written in Haggin's
book.

If Burghauser had written it down himself, we'd have surer ground for
a judgement -- and incidentally, we might be inclined to take a rather
dimmer view of Burghauser as a person, as I was saying to Karl.

But it is, he might just have been having a gentle dig at Schoenberg in
retrospect in 1966 ("and, you know, for such a great man, he really
didn't have a very good ear as a conductor! Because,....", and as
Lelia pointed out, he might have been mistaken in his interpretation
of the incident); or alternatively he might have been a serious enemy of
Schoenberg's in the 20's.

We'll never know!

But it was interesting to think about. Thanks, Dan.
