The story wouldn't be 'basically true', then, would it?
Surely the only interest of the story is that it's a story told, not by
'some storyteller', but by someone we might well think trustworthy (the
principal bassoon and sometime chairman of the VPO) about a great
composer who was very much maligned and misunderstood in Vienna at the
time, to the point of being thought a charlatan.
And the question is, do we believe the story?
If it wasn't an accurate story, but rather something that may have had a
small basis in fact, but which was then exaggerated in order to diminish
Schoenberg's credibility, then I think that to call putting it about in
one's memoirs, 'making a point', is rather too charitable as well.
Doing that would just be criminal, quite independently of what other
composer/conductors are or aren't able to do when rehearsing their
pieces.
Consider: if I call you a thief, and you complain, it can be no part of
my defence of my statement that there are other people 'like you' who
*are* thieves. The only thing that counts is whether or not *you* are a
thief.
