I could usually get maybe 3 months normal playing out of a well adjusted reed or
5-8 performances of Mahler's 5th? or 20 performances of Nutcracker but leave it on
the mtpc overnight - bad news - big time. I always had 3 backup reeds ready to go
but usually didn't rotate, just switched when one started getting weak or the mtpc
impression caused the tip to move closer to the mtpc resulting in more resistance
and less openness and a lack of power when needed. I found that my reeds would
just wear out and lose flexibility if I was playing a lot of loud stuff.

Is it possible that an imprint on the back of the reed that is the result of
being forced into the opening on the table has caused a small part of the reed to
actually rub on the inner part of the sidewalls and the resulting added friction
of this contact would increase the resistance? You could experiment. Leave a reed
on the mtpc with the ligature quite snug (more than usual) for a week, and I am
willing to bet that the reed will then be in a poor and noticeably damaged state.
I also believe that if one were to cut through the area of the reed at the edge of
the imprint you will find, under magnification, the pores of the wood are more
oval inn shape from being compressed that the pores outside of the imprint area.
(No, the damage is not caused by an overly tightened ligature, it's caused by the
length of time it is left under pressure. I barely tighten the screws - one just
snug, the other one just barely (I don't remember which one, haven't played all
summer)).

I have never been able to revive a reed that had this impression.

If you disagree, correct me.
