Gary, what makes you think awful things happen to a reed, even if it does
have impressions from the mouthpiece. This only means to me that the reed has
fitted itself to the lay of the mouthpiece.

It's an old reed makers trick to leave the reed on the mouthpiece overnight
before final finishing.

I often leave a reed on the mouthpiece overnight (after wiping out the
mouthpiece with a silk cloth, and drying the reed by hand). It's simply the
best place for it.

I doubt if you will find any sort of yucky "build-up" in any of my
mouthpieces, or in Tom Ski's, etc. This kind of buildup is heard immediately
as detrimental to the tone.
